Hollywood Icons - 1930s Jean Harlow

About the Star

Some may argue, Jean Harlow was the original blonde in Hollywood.
Finding fame at.......
Jean starred in many films during the height of her career in the 1930s including.......she made a name for herself a comedy actress.
Jean died at the young age of 26 from what is now believed to have been a kidney infection.

How to get the look

Best known for her platinum blonde hair, styled into classic 1930s style of the pin curl; along with her thin penciled-in eyebrows and red lipstick.

Curl the hair in small sections towards the scalp, holding in place with a metal pin. With straight hair this may be best to work with damp hair, sleeping with the pins in. In the morning when dressed and fully made up, undo the pins and lightly brush out curls to get the desired effect.

In Jean's day hairdressers would have recommended washing the hair everyday to upkeep the platinum blonde colour. Jean was known for commenting on how the light shade of blonde picked up every speck of dust and dirt and so at times could be hard to maintain.
Today in order to maintain the platinum blonde, reducing the yellow tones and maintaing a healthy shine, I would recommend using a silver shampoo like this L'Oreal Expert Silver Shampoo pictured

Hollywood Icons - 1920s Greta Garbo

Each week I'm going to post a Hollywood Icon from a different era and how to get their look.

About the star
The 1920s was the era of silent movies, and Swedish star Greta Garbo was one of the biggest names in Hollywood during this time. Able to speak very little English, Garbo was able to captivate audiences in her silent movies and quickly became the go-to-girl at MGM.
The 1930s brought with it a huge change in cinema, and the introduction of speaking films saw the popularity of silent movies dwindle. Garbo had to make the transition if she was to continue as a leading lady in Hollywood, and that she did. Starring in Anna Christie in 1930, the film became the highest grossing of the year, cementing Garbo's success in Hollywood.
After making 28 movies and at the age of 36, Garbo retired from the film industry and decided to stay out of the limelight for the remainder of her life.

How to get the look
To create her stunning eyes, Greta would use a small amount of petroleum jelly over her eyelid, layering this with a neutral powder, up to the brow line and then blending a dark shadow into the crease to create a dramatic eye. Finally she would line her eye with a blend of petroleum and charcoal pigment.
